Fire Risk Assessments in Surrey and West Sussex
A suitable and sufficient fire risk assessment helps identify hazards, understand who may be at risk and decide what fire safety measures are needed. JPEC Fire & Security carries out fire risk assessments for businesses, landlords, managing agents and organisations across Surrey and West Sussex.
Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person for a workplace or other non-domestic premises must ensure that a fire risk assessment is completed and recorded. The requirements also apply to relevant communal and non-domestic parts of multi-occupied residential buildings. The responsible person remains legally accountable, even when a competent assessor is appointed to carry out the assessment.
What Does a Fire Risk Assessment Cover?
The assessment considers how a fire could start, how it may develop, who could be affected and whether the existing precautions are suitable. It also looks at the way fire safety is managed, not only the equipment installed in the building.
The scope will depend on the premises, but can include ignition sources, combustible materials, people at particular risk, escape routes, fire doors, alarm and detection systems, emergency lighting, signs, firefighting equipment, staff procedures, maintenance records and arrangements for review.

Clear, Practical Recommendations
A fire risk assessment should be useful, understandable and specific to the property. Following the visit, we provide a written record of the findings and explain any actions recommended to reduce risk or improve existing arrangements.
Recommendations may relate to management procedures, housekeeping, escape routes, signage, staff information, maintenance or physical fire safety measures. Where improvement work is needed, it should be considered and prioritised in the context of the risk identified.
When Should an Assessment Be Reviewed?
Fire risk assessments should be kept under review. A review may be needed when there are significant changes to the building, occupancy, layout, work activities or fire precautions, or following an incident or other reason to believe the existing assessment is no longer valid.
